I need your ideas

So, I have been asked to teach a cake decorating class in the evening RS mtg in Jan. I have NO idea what to teach/talk about. I have up to 30 minutes. Anything you would like to know or things others would might like to know?

Well, some of us need the real basics - like getting one layer to stay on tope of the other without sliding off! What kind of frosting do you use; do you ever use Pastry Pride? What's the simplest thing a person can do to make the most difference between a boring and a dazzling cake? The rest is beyond me!

Hmmm. That's a tough one. I would agree with the real basics. But it's nice to teach things that are easy to do that will make their cake look kinda fancy. Things like using the different decorating tips to create different affects; making flowers and that kind of thing. I am curious about the stuff you put over the cake to make stiff shapes. Is it called fondant? I don't know. Some of us don't know enough to even ask an intelligent question.

I thought I would answer your questions - I have never even heard of pastry pride. I use a buttercream frosting 0 have to use real butter or it doesn't work. I'll give you the recipe if you want. Make sure cakes are level before trying to stack them. Use gel colorings not liquid, it changes the consistency of frosting. The stuff you use to make stiff shapes is called fondant. It is a lot like play-doh or modeling clay. Just roll out cut etc. Make sure you store it the right way though!

Wish you were here to walk me through all this. I would like your frosting recipe. I didn't know about liquid food coloring. I'm sure you will present helpful pointers!!
